Blast Radius

This case focuses on Blast Radius, a very successful Vancouver-based online marketing firm, which faced an uncertain future after the dot-com bust. Part A of the case is set 3 years after the company was founded. Blast Radius had early success, taking on several large accounts including Casio, Nike, Nintendo, Lego, Universal Studio, Atlantic Records, and MTV.

The dot-com bust has just happened - many competitors and dot-com businesses went bust. The CEO needed to identify how to grow his company in this uncertain market, based on their core competencies. Part B updates the case and discusses the success attributed to Blast Radius' core competencies.

The case study gives the reader a historical perspective on the rise of a local online marketing firm in Vancouver to the global stage. The case first highlights the growing popularity of the Internet in the late nineties and as such describes the business opportunities online. The case then traces the growth and decline of the many dot-com businesses and the many marketing agencies with online specialization that had hoped to gain market share and serve these online businesses. The case next describes the emergences of Blast Radius from the local market to the global stage, while learning some of the clients and strategies that Blast Radius has used.

The Blast Radius case introduces students to the world of online marketing consultancies. It introduces the changing dynamics and impacts to online marketing agencies during the turbulent dot-com boom and bubble burst in the early millennium. The case can be used to (1) understand the changing nature and different classifications of online marketing consultancies, (2) introduce the Three C framework by Michael Dell for successful internet business development, (3) provide the concept of core competencies as a strategic tool, and (4) study the challenges of growing a successful global entrepreneurial business in midst of uncertainties and market turmoil.
