OncoGenex Technologies: Bringing Drugs to Market in a Tight Funding Environment
This case focuses on the strategic direction of OncoGenex Technologies, a pharmaceutical company headquartered in Vancouver, BC. The student is asked to put on the CEO hat and decide a course of action which is to be presented to the board immediately.
The case illustrates some of the unique aspects of the pharmaceutical industry and particularly how the Canadian and BC scene has developed over time. Issues that are addressed include:
- the nature of funding drug development costs versus the odds of creating a successful drug and any future payoff;
- the vagaries of becoming a high profile publicly traded company; and
- the difficulties in getting listed on larger exchanges.
