UBC has established entrepreneurship@UBC, a campus-wide initiative providing the next generation of entrepreneurs with mentorship, pre-and post-incorporation services, incubation space, course work, events and unique opportunities for relationship building and learning. Anchoring the initiative is the $10m entrepreneurship@UBC Seed Accelerator Fund that has been formed to make very early stage investments in startups founded by UBC students and recent alumni. The fund is being capitalized by generous donations from alumni and matching contributions from BCIC.
To kick off the first round of investments, the "entrepreneurship@UBC Seed Accelerator Competition" will be held in fall 2011, with applications due by September 9th, 2011. Up to five shortlisted companies will pitch their business ideas to an investment panel comprised of some of BC's most successful entrepreneurs and UBC alumni, including Haig Farris, a pioneer in the Canadian Venture Capital industry. In addition to a cash prize, the shortlisted companies may also receive investment offers from entrepreneurship@UBC ranging from $25,000 to $100,000.
Through UBC's strong alumni network and its relationships with the business communities in Vancouver and the Okanagan, entrepreneurship@UBC offers significant resources and a powerful learning experience for students to gain the necessary skills and experience to create profitable, sustainable business ventures that can stimulate jobs, investment and economic impacts. Students participating in the program will benefit through the enhancement of their university education with networking opportunities, practical skills and funding opportunities to fuel their success as entrepreneurs.
This exciting accelerator program is one of three entrepreneurship@ programs created to address the need for the creation and launch of new, sustainable technology companies in British Columbia, helping to make our province the best place to start and grow technology companies.
