Patents
A patent is a right, granted by government, to exclude others from making, using or selling your invention in Canada. Patents must be new, non-obvious and useful.
Patents allow you to disclose your unique product or service to the public, while preventing others from making or selling the claimed invention. Patents last for 20 years from the filing date; however once they expire they become public domain.
Why is it important?
Obtaining a patent for your idea/product will help you gain maximum commercial value from your product. It will prevent others from making a similar invention without consent and/or compensation.
